When Mathieu receives a phone call from a theater director whose production he has left, the director's voice is played by the director himself, Stéphane Brize. Levin.
Guillaume Canet and Alba Rohrwacher are a well-cast pair whose chemistry was essential to the film's success
This French film by Stéphane Brize is a sensitive drama/romance in which old lovers meet again at a different stage in their lives. I'm a little torn because the film's depiction of their (re)relationship is well-defined and plays true, with moments of subtle humor and endearing interactions.
Brizé’s constructions and long takes are beautiful but rather barren, like the inner lives of his sick characters, which are precisely circumscribed
For example, there is a wedding scene where two men “sing” (whistling) like birds to each other, speaking quite eloquently and magnetically – they would watch this separation. But the film is painfully slow, emotionally short and almost over two hours long, which would have made it a more efficient running time.
But the very familiar rhythms of the story all lack the weight to justify this dismissive treatment
