Narrative

Anora, a young Brooklyn sex worker, meets and spontaneously marries the son of an oligarch. This is a story of tortured love, a fiery look at how a young woman scraping by as a sex worker in Brooklyn sees her hopes and dreams come true in an unfathomable way when she meets her fairytale prince, the son of a Russian oligarch.

Their lives change dramatically when they marry

The chemistry between them is instant and enchanting. Mikey Madison is wonderful in her role as a young woman whose fairytale dream comes true. But unlike Elizabeth Taylor in "Butterfield 8" or Elisabeth Shue in "Leaving Las Vegas," the female protagonist here never becomes the classic prostitute with a heart of gold. She remains tough as steel to the end, full of rage and ready to throw her next punch. Although she never becomes a pleasant person, her determination never falters.

Many have called it a comedy in parts

She knows how to stand up for herself and angrily rejects those who fail in that regard. It's one of the best performances of the year. Just when you think you know where the film is going, it turns expectations on their head and proves to be a much more sophisticated film with a sobering reality at its core. To be honest, that's a bit of a stretch, regardless of the dark humor. A word of warning: this film is quite taxing on the psyche.

You might be exhausted by the end
