When Brett Goldstein, Jason Segel and Bill Lawrence were asked how they convinced Harrison Ford to be on the show, Segel said Goldstein originally wanted a "Harrison Ford type" and would audition people who looked like Ford. Segel told Goldstein they should have at least introduced him to Ford first, thinking he would have turned it down immediately, but at least other people would hear that Harrison Ford was brought in, which would have piqued the interest of other famous actors.

Goldstein still doesn't understand what he did to convince him, but he was elated nonetheless. From the reviews I'm reading here, people either love this show or they don't love it enough, and it seems like it might depend on reviewers' reaction to Jason Segal.

The relationships are complex and emotional, and the very real human challenges are well-drawn

I've enjoyed his movies and think he's perfect for the role, and the addition of Harrison Ford takes the show to an even higher level. The writing is excellent, the story is fresh, and the characters are original without going overboard in being too stereotypically quirky.

It can be hilarious to die for and then cry in the next minute
